Topic 2

What is the Order of operations and what does it do.

What does the order of operation do?

The order of operations is a certain order of what goes first. If there was no order of operations then there would be a lot of different answers to lots of equations.

What is the order of the operations ?

The order of operations is : solve exponents first ,then solve Prentice/brackets, then do the multiplication/division part of the equation left to right. Then do addition/subtraction part of the equation left to right. A easy way to remember this is PEMDAS.

P= Prentice

E= exponent

M = multiply

D = divide

A = addition

S = Subtract

Example of a equation to solve. 3+4 x 2^3 - (2+3) ?

To solve this we will do the Prentice/bracket first following the order of operations.2+3=5. After that we do the exponents. 2^3 = 8 . Then we do the multi/divi part of it 4x 8= 32. After that we add/sub following the order of operations. 3+32 =35 , 35 - 5= 30. So the answer is 30. If you dont follow the order of operations you will get a answer like 2739 which is WRONG.

What is the order of operations if you don't know exponents?

For people who don't know exponents there is order of operations, They just have to learn exponents. Exponents is available to learn on my website just click exponents here to go to. EXPONENTS.

Will a answer always be counted wrong for not following the order of operations?

Yes this will always happen if you don't follow the order operations you will always get the answer WRONG. But if you do follow the order you will get the answer correct.
